1 of the wonders of the world- the Green Bay Packers!
So.. if you have been following.. you know I had two options for my journey to the actually ruins of Machu Picchu... well I opted for number 2, and I slept in until 7:30am, got ready, had breakfast... well actually I woke up around 4am to examine if I wanted to go to WaynaPichu, and I saw that it was a little rainy, so I decided to not climb... Okay.. SO I had a great breakfast, Coffee with sweeten condensed milk, fruit with yogurt and little wheat balls- like super mini puffed wheat. Then they brought me two eggs when I asked for one and sweet bread.. TWO words, I didnt have thymus for breakfast. Check out is 9am, so I leave my big pack with the hotel and head out on the town. A quick email to the fam. and by 10am Im on the bus to Machu Picchu...
I arrive and there are guides everywhere waiting for their people or waiting for clients to choose them.. I had a guide, Milagros, but she wasnt there yet so I just waited around. At this time is wasnt raining, but I had brought a cheapy poncho just incase. Then I noticed the people across from me were speaking english and one of the ladies had on a PACKER- WORLD CHAMPION t-shirt. I thought to myself I wonder if they are from WISCO.. but before I could ask, they got up and moved to the cafeteria area... SO I was still sitting all alone, and I figured what the hay, Im going to go bug them and ask if they are from Wisconsin... whats the harm in that..
So I head over to the cafe and they are sitting at one of the pinic tables, (they are two ladies and a man).. SO I say, "Excuse me, are you from Wisconsin or just packer fans?" They say they are from WISCONSIN! And I light up like a Christmas tree! The last person I saw from Wisconsin was Hayley and she left me in Costa Rica the 10th of November.... So I ask where they are from and they are all basically from the Milwaukee area! WHERE I lived for 6 years! WOOT WOO! So I am excited! And I tell them about how I watched the Super Bowl alone in on a tiny tv in a hot and humid bedroom in Nicoya Costa Rica, and how NO ONE there understood how happy I was that OUR team won, and what that meant for the state! The Packers are more wisconsin then cheese! The are the lifeblood of Green BAY. A packer fan is the best fan because, one I think GB is the smallest city to actually have a team. Two I bet WI has the smallest population to have an NFL team. The Packers play. mejor dicho KICKASS in anyweather, why? Because they are from Wisconsin, and their statium doesnt have a roof! Thats right, the frozen tundra baby! Oh and snowy games.. how are the stands? LOADED! To the max! Oh and the FANS own the Packers... I think(?.. or something cool like that.. like all the seats are owned by season ticket holders, etc) SO its a reallllll small town, small state PRIDE thing we got going on.. OH yeah and they won the first couple super bowls! So you know we be good... Understand this love? Actually you might not understand ... . But imagine...
Wisconsin is a state of about 4million people.. very rural, expections are Milwaukee and Madison, and even those cities are no larger then 500,000ppl... Green Bay, home of the packers aka los empaquedores, is only populated with around 100,000. Wisconsin winters are harsh and cold. The sun sets early and rises late. Sometimes something as small as football game is all the people have to look forward too, its a change in the rutine. AND with everything that happened with Farve.. well you can imagine, the star-demi god of a region/state resigns and then years later begins to play for the rival! Well its just plan madness! He cheated on Wisco... SO as a Packer nation we were a little jaded and really winning with super bowl was like a breath of fresh happy air in the middle of a long harsh winter. I remember when the scored the first couple of touchdowns, I could just imagine my friends in the local bar all watching and celebrating each play! I could almost feel the energy in CR... So it was more then just a game, and it wasnt until I met these random Wisconsinites IN MACHUPICCHU that I was able to celebrate the win!
But I was also able to talk about Wisconsin to people that understand. Since they were from the Milwaukee area I talked a little bit about what I did there, and about how being from Wisconsin, the land of beer and cheese, I told them about how I missed a big draft of finely craft beer! I told them they had to return to Wisco and have a brew for me! Seriously... I like beer, but in Costa Rica there are basically two types that they sell everywhere, Imperial and Pilsen, and they taste exactly the same- basically.. pilsen has a little more alcohol, thus its a tad more bitter, but in the end they are the same. SO I am missing good beer. I used to work at a mircobrewery that also had a fishfry on fridays! (Lake Front Brewery- its awesome) It offers Brewery Tours and Fried Fish.. you know your in Wisconsin when.... So anyway.. it was nice to chat with some fellow gringo wisconsinites! But I didnt wanna bother them more so I went to find my guide. She still had not arrived and now it was starting to rain.. ugh..
