1st SATURDAY in Peru and other senior citizen events
Okay... this is how my first saturday night went in Cusco...
Morning Chilllaxing.. Each day sweet Carolina makes me and the other student- cute english girl- a BIG OL FRUIT salad.. then I met her 14yro grandson Ale, and he agrees to take me out on the town. I want to get postcards and recuerdos. The postcards are reasonably priced.. but the stamps are 5.50 S/. thats like 2$ each stamp! In the States there only about 30 cents! WOAH.. anyway.. then we cruise to the Plaza de Armas- Cuscos center.. then we scale the near by hills and I see Cusco from above. Its beautiful. Very cultural.. Lots of people, clay roofs, llamas, colors, fabrics, choclo, blue skies, mountains, music, energy... Im enjoying myself. Then we return to the house...
Around 7pm, Carolinas nephew, whos about 40something, swings by, and Carolina visits me to the party that he is going to.. awkward. She says, oh your going to a party.. bring Johannah. And he replies... well its mostly older people, and Carolina insisits, and well I dont have anything better to do, so around 830 we head out to this party. Miguel (the nephew) tells me its a small get together and they play music and sing. He is bringing a piano, so I imagine its a very musical group... We arrive at the house of this friend. Its really nice and has a lot of artifacts from obivious years of travel... and while we wait for the rest of the guest to show up, Im given a Pisco Spirit and we watch DIVAS 2010... wtf.. Im sitting around with a group of 50+ peruvian men watching DIVAS 2010- we're talking Miley Cirus, Adele, - hosted by crazy Paula Abdul... not really what I expected for a Sat. night in Cusco.. but oh well... SO this party is basically a Karoeke party without the word machine. There is one guy that can really play the guitar, and the two keyboardists are learning... and basically the women sang, and they sang clearily typical Southern Colonial South American .. So I was lost, and by about 130am... I couldnt handle it anymore, and I was ready for bed.... Plus for dinner they made Hotdogs... and it was messing with my tummy... so you can just imagine.. I have a tummy rumble and Im surround by 60 year old women singing Selena to the jams of two electric pianos and a guitar. I love my life :)
Once home I sleep. I actually havent slept this much since CR.. And in the afternoon Carolina and I do a little tour of town, I get some cheese from the mercado and some almendras, pasas y otras frutas secas... In the evening I plan my trip of the Incan REALM....

Okay.. first things... Valentines day. Here and in other Latin American Countries, they call it, Dia de Amistad y Amor. Friendship and Love Day! I like that they throw the amistad in there b-c otherwise its all about couples... when really celebrating friendship is equally important... I mean.. when relationships fluffy up.. your friends are there to help you keep on keeping on... am I right? I know I couldnt be without my friends. They are my world. I love them dearly. Family, Friends and Lovers :) isnt life just filled with the best things?
Okay, so sweet Carolina was involved in a program for the day. It was in the Casa del Maestro in the Plaza de Armas. She played the guitar and sang songs about friendship and love. It was really nice. Other people sang, read poems o the bible and these little sisters played instruments. Then they gave out hot fruit punch (with really fruit chunks) and cake. Then everyone got funny headbands with multicolored hair and fake ties and noise makers and danced around... Again I found myself at a social gather with the median age being 65 if not 75yros. It would only be brought down by the 7 and 10 year old girl that were there with there g-mama.... Oh well.. an experience is an experience... plus the punch was yummy...
For lunch we head to a veg. rest. God Peruvian food is tasty. And LUNCH is the BIG meal. I dont even think they know what dinner is.. and if you mention eating after 7pm they say youll get sick... anyway... Lunch- starts with salad, and then SOUP! Soup is key! Yummy papas (supposedly, Peru has over 3480 different types of potato.. how does that even happen.. I have no idea, but I hope MONSANTO and CARGILL stay away.. if they get there mits on the place will be down to 3 types.. red, idaho and whatever other kinda papa we have in the states.. I know its a far cry from 3000!.... oh and then has if youre not FULL from the soup and the salad they bring out the third plate. And this was a type of quiona "hotdish" of sorts. It was yummer-licious! :)
