Halloween Tico Style
10/30- SO we arrive in Playa Tamarindo. One of the better known Playas en Costa Rica, but because the sunset so early we are arriving at night, well darkness. Really if I had to say one this bad about this place it would be that, so sun after 530pm?! come on, really!? There is so much to see and do!- But anyway, we arrive and find ourselves settling in at the Hostel Obeja Negra- Black Sheep- and right off the bat I like the looks of this place. Surf Boards alining the front side of the buildings, hammocks in the trees, youth all around. Inside we got a pool table and a BIG open sitting area- kinda like a U shaped sofa and a big screen TV. Almost reminds me of a dorm common room- but not stuffy and NO RAs (no offense RA friends). The place is run by a blond Puerteño (somebody from Buenos Aires) names Juan, and his Che counter parts come and go as well- or maybe they were staying- I dont know, didn't keep track.. But anyway, after Golfito the lodging situa. jst keeps getting better, and for 5 mil a night (10$USD), plus coffee and interwebs- this place is rocking. We get a room with two bunk beds right off the common area and the womens rooms are right down the hall---
Once settled Hayley and I decide its time to get our Halloween on. First stop: Super Tamarindo- There we get the only the Oregon Trail worthy supplies- Vodka, ICE and mixed fruit juice, there may have been some bizcochos in there to, but I don't recall. So once we return to the Obeja K makes us some drinks and we have to brainstorm Hayleys costume. I planned ahead and just brought my cop costume (last year it was fashioned into a Boarder Patrol Costume and my class act group were sexy BoarderPatrolers- Hope, Linsdey and I, chasing our illegal immigrant companions- Ruben <3, Andres and Laz--- it was awesome and too much fun!) Anyway so I had that, K planned to be a pirate and Hayley... she forgot her birthday is the day after Halloween, and althought she knew she'd spend her Bday there, she forgot all about little ol' Halloween, but what can you expect from an only child? hehe (jk noons, I love ya). So the noons and I get our drink on while K makes friends with the Che's. We contemplaint a cat, a pirate, a prisoner, a pirate, a cat... Well we didnt have to much to work with, so Hayley ended up being a pirate- basically, 3/4 pants, a bandana, hoop earrings= pirate. and once the Mejores Best Friends were ready we headed out...
Destination Aqua- I guess this is the place to go, and since there was a bit of a line to get in we stop at the local pulperia (convience store) and pick up some chelas (beer). At this point I must have been feeling it because I recall how MUCH FUN it was being a Boarder Patrol last year, and with my girls at my side- we basically joked around and asked everyone for their IDs and Passports- you know checkin their status... Well so I was only one cop and I was in Costa Rica, but I remember telling this dreadlocked guy - "No te Muevas!" but he just kinda walked by me... now Im feeling dumb. Also I wish I would have covered my US flag arm patch with something Tico, but se la vi.. can't do to much now- but I was feeling a little silly, I mean, come on... Gringa po-po, macho nation, you catch my drift... Anyway we get in line for the club and this is the weird part, we get to the front, and they ask if we want to go to the normal level for 3mil (6$) of 5mil (10$) for the VIP? We got a choice of VIP- I mean, everyone gets the choice of VIP... weird, so just to check it out we first go to the main level. Its okay- REALLY crowded. I mean its a club I get that, but even more packed then I expected soo lame- Plus I dont even recall what the music was, too many people to get a good listen in... so I think we bought a beer that was over priced, so after a short debat we decided, to pay the 2mil (4$) dif. and head up to VIP- plus, that includes 2 drinks sooooo it was a deal. Anyway we got swap wrist bands, get our tickets and re-enter the mob. MAN.... I thought my costume was okay---- but here they have MODELS that are dressed up- Im talking professional costumes- there was even the Avatar girl and guy- id say there names bubut Hayley and I decided we are the ONLY people in the WORLD that haven't seen that movie... Stop me if Im wrong....
So we get to the VIP- LAME! now there were TONS of people downstairs and only a handful of un-cordinated gringos dancing upstairs- LAME... but we here so lets have a shot of Whiskey- Woot WOO--- Long story short- we use our tickets, dance a bit and decide to leave... On the way home we stop at a lil bar not far from our hostel- have a beer- Hayleys dancing by this point by the way- so you know were having a good time, and after Hayley turns down the advantances from some red headed gringo we return home- Now this part is funny. We go to bed- Ahhh but in the morning I awake- OOOFF for not having that much fun... I sure feel like I did. At least I took out my contacts. Hayley is still sleeping so I make my way out to find K and talk about the evening. HE says that once we got back it was lights out time = be respectful in the Hostel.. Well I wouldn't stay in the room and Hayley was demanding TOAST. Now K doesn't speak english so for him to tell me that Hayley was demanding something from him is just tooo funny. He said he didn't know what to tell her, one he wasn't sure what she was talking about and two the kitchen was closed. Meanwhile I was wandering the Hostel and well yeah. Finally someone else had to be the baby-sitter. hehehe But it was halloween and everyone gets to cut lose now and again.
10/31- So we spend most of the day at the beach, laying around. Sleeping on the sand in the shade is one of the best things EVER- for reals. Around lunch time we really need to eat and even though we had some food in the cooler we did not have the energy to make anything. So Hayley and I found a place that had a deal- Sandwich, Drink, and a sweet Crepe for $5. Deal. Now we order and I was going to share with K, but WITHOUT our knowledge he talked to some locals and they called in an order for a Casado for him (like what we ate at the Soda in the Mercado en San Jose) Yeah. He got a Casado de BISTEC delivered to him at the rest. All I could say was, WTF KENNETH?! Why didn't you let us in on that deal? Casado are GREAT and would have been the perfect hangover cure- if we were hungover that is.. . hehehe..
SO anyway.... We watch the sunset while swimming in the sea. I really couldn't have asked for a better day. After a 'long' night it was really nice to chill by the ocean and jsut have a relaxing night. For dinner we got out to a rest. and get some Cheviche- I love this stuff. This is also when Hayley comes up with a new idea.. dining with cats. We elaborate that we could make a calendar of scenes where one dines with cats. This started because there were about 10 tables and one waiter, so we had time to make up funny things, plus a couple of cats were walking to and from the tables... thus "Dining with Cats- Tonight our special guest is Atun, from Tamarindo CR" blah blah blah. After our fill of cheviche and chelas we return to the Obeja, and hit the hay.
11/1- In the am, once I awak around 9am I head out to get Hayley a little birthday something or other. I could have gotten a Costa Rican DingDong, but I figured something filled with Leche Condesada or Cejata would have been more appropriate. Once she wakes and heads to the Bano I make my move... I put the funny little dessert on a plate and I don't have a candle so I use a water proof match instead. *those have really long burny parts soo it's kinda like a mini sparkler*. Once Hayley returns, timing is crucial so I have her close her eyes. Once the match is lit its go time. We get about 3secs in and the match is almost out, Hayley is elated with her first bday cake infront of her and well... I dont want the match to make the 'cake' all funky so I put it out. But by putting out the match, I also put out Hayleys excitment and she says "wait a minute, is that a Costa Rican things?" and I reply "what?!" and she says "YOU BLEW OUT MY CANDLE!"... Oh God! She's right... I really didn't mean too, I explain that I didn't want it to funk-a-fy and well she was right. Im dumb... but it was pretty darn funny. Once Hayley ate up her cake we agree to hit the road and make our way to Samara. We leave behind our costumes, I place my cop dress on the clothes line and when we are pulling out I see that K at left his Captain Morgans pirate hat in the tree infront of the Hostel... Ohh mejorese best friends- what a trip we have been having.
Along the way we stop at Playa Avellana- (Hazelnut beach) and make a pinic. As soon as we set the cooler down the local dogs come around- god really! What do they want? bread with mayo? we really dont have that much to offer, and they dont seem to understand "salte hujadeputa" "vayase perrosdemierda" I mean really? But maybe they spoke english. After lunch we lounge around for a while and K takes off down the beach for a run... seriously his timing is all messed up... Shortly after he leaves Hayley and I realize its going to rain... so we pack up the car and play the waiting game. I really dont know what happens to common sense, but if I was running and I realized it was going to rain I would turn around and head back to the car... but not K... no no no. SO we wait, and finally he arrives and puts his hands in the air like "what?!" Jeez.. like what, I mean, it's going to rain, we still are about 2 hours from Samara- and its Hayleys Birthday- "apurate!"- remember the sun set early soo we dont have that much time to get to the next destination with light, and honestly its a lot less stressful to arrive with light, then once its dark- you get a better idea of the town and a better idea of the place your staying.. but honestly I wish I would have enjoyed that last beach picnic a little more because I REALLY wasn't prepared for what was ahead of us....
